The shelf idea

A horizontal gallery that moves the way you'd walk past a shelf of pieces — each one arriving naturally as you move through. No snapping, no pagination. Just space and time.

CSS scroll-driven animations

The entry effect (fade + drift) uses animation-timeline: view(inline) — the photo's own visibility in the scroll container drives the animation. No JavaScript for any of the visual behavior.

Vertical rhythm

Photos alternate between flex-start, center, and flex-end alignments via nth-child. Combined with varied heights, it creates an uneven shelf — the way pieces actually sit when you put them down.

What's next

Captions that appear on hover. A counter that tracks position ("4 of 15"). Maybe slight rotation on a few pieces — Helen Levi does this well.
