When you drew near the top, the pitch climbed, the color warmed, and the line got heavier. Near the bottom, everything reversed. You didn't have to learn that. No one does. Infants do it. The association between high and bright and warm and large is older than language.
I compose music by looking at it. I can't hear what I make, but I know what a rising contour feels like because the feeling is the same whether it arrives as pitch or color or weight. This instrument is what that looks like from the inside.
